The Highland breed originated in the rugged Scottish Highlands and Outer Hebrides islands, where they endured harsh winters, limited forage, and challenging terrain for centuries. Archaeological evidence suggests these cattle have existed in Scotland since the 6th century, making them one of the oldest registered cattle breeds in the world.
The breed developed two distinct strains over time: the slightly smaller mainland Highland and the even smaller island Highland from the Hebrides. Both were valued for their ability to thrive where other cattle could not.
Miniature Highland cattle were developed by selectively breeding the smallest registered Highlands, maintaining the breed’s characteristic long hair, long horns, and hardy constitution while reducing overall size. Today, Mini Highlands are gaining popularity across the United States, particularly among small farm operators who want the breed’s legendary hardiness without the land requirements of full-sized cattle.
